WAVE POWER Here in the UK we are surrounded by water, and yet we have very few wave power electricity generators. Why is that do you think? My guess is that apart from the capital investment the electricity is free How can anyone make a profit on free? Now to be fair there are schemes around but they all appear to be prototypes of one sort or another. One was installed on Islay in Scotland. Its called "LIMPET" (Land Installed Marine Powered Energy Transformer) and is based on the Oscillating Water Column. That is waves comes into tube(container)compesses air which drives turbine. Wave out does the same. Its rated at 500KW, its easy to build and is unobtrusive. see www.wavegen.co.uk for full details. Theres another just had finance agreed on to be in Cornwall. This is going to be called "The Wave Hub" and is basically a way of testing out the different styles of generator. There are three different styles. * Tap Chan This is where water runs into a tapered channel in order to run a generation device. * Pendular * Oscillating Water Column like the LIMPET |
